Question about the new Nickels?
I know nickels are pretty much as worthless as all the other coins currently being produced, but after hearing a lot lately about how it costs more to make a penny than a penny is worth, and more to make a nickel than a nickel is worth...
Why did they go through all the additional costs they must have had to design all new nickels ...new artwork, dyes, etc.?? Anyone know, or this just more government spending? |

I thought the same thing about why they designed the new nickel. The new nickels have been hoared since they first came out. In fact, when I go to the banks to buy my $100 boxes of nickels, the tellers often will say to me, "They are not the new nickels". I'm always happy to hear that because though there is a quick profit in selling the "new" nickel, I would rather not have them mixed in with my "old" ones just incase they come-out with a steel nickel with the same "new" nickel design. My only answer is that the treasury and mint don't really have a basic understanding of the value of real (hard) money to paper money. |

You can see how worthless or valuable your spare change really is. |

Anyway, I think the Mint may recoup the price of the redesign through selling special sets. I bet they didn't anticipate the price spike of Cu and Ni, though. Now they have a negative seingorage. I stopped by a local bank yesterday on the way home from work. I asked for a box of nickels, and I received a whole $100 box of new 2006 "Return to Monticello". I can't see the mintmarks without opening the box up, but I think they're D. Someone's selling these boxes of 2006 D nickels on Ebay at an average closing price of just over $140, plus $15 shipping. Maybe I should go back to that branch and see if they have some more! Anyone know if the Federal Reserve Branch banks sell boxes of coins to the public? I know we have a Fed branch here in Little Rock. |
Re: Question about the new Nickels?
I've had two almost BU "Return To Monticello" nickels show up in my change. I've found the keelboat and Louisiana Purchase nickels too, but never a buffalo nickel. I managed to get one buffalo nickel for showing up at a coin show, they were handing one out as an incentive if you had the flyer.
Anyway, now that pennies and nickels are real money, I might keep some of these new nickels around as I like having some cash on hand anyway. |
